frequently asked questions

When is the next school?

-Our next school will be starting in January 14th, 2012 and we are currently accepting applications

Who are we?

The Holoholo DTS is a ministry of Youth With A Mission (YWAM).  (See www.ywam.org for more information.)

What does holoholo mean? What does "We Go" mean?

Holoholo is a Hawaiian word for “going out” or “cruising” or “to go fishing.”  Holoholo Ministries is a family style ministry that has gone “cruising” and “fishing for men” by ministering and evangelizing within the Hawaiian Islands, the South Pacific, and Pacific Rim countries. In the past 5 years we have been focused on the Kona community and overseas in the Philippines and Thailand.

"We Go" is simply submitting your own plans to follow Jesus. "We Go" is saying yes and accepting to let go and let God. No longer is it your own way but Jesus' way.

What is DTS like?

Holoholo’s "We Go" DTS is a 21-week course emphasizing your personal relationship with the Lord, as well as your interpersonal relationships with fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. DTS includes a 12-week Lecture Phase and a 9-week Outreach Phase. We will kick start our Lecture Phase for seven weeks in North Kohala and finish the remaining weeks of Lecture Phase overseas intertwined with our Outreach Phase to the Philippines and Thailand.

During Lecture Phase we will be learning from various speakers and applying what we learn through ministry activities in the island of Hawaii as well as overseas. We focus on deepening your walk with the Lord through personal quiet times, Bible study, worship, books, projects, lectures from international and local speakers and hands-on ministry time. Some of the speakers scheduled to share in our school include some of YWAM’s early pioneers, Donna Jordan, Danny Lehman and YWAM’s co-founder Darlene Cunningham.

During Outreach Phase, we’ll continue to share our love for Christ cross-culturally in the Philippines and Thailand.  We will share Christ through creative means of evangelism and most importantly, through living a daily lifestyle of hospitality, passion for Jesus, and an others-oriented attitude.  HIDTS also partners with local churches, college groups, cultural events and communities, using powerful ministry tools and gifts such as the creative arts (music, drama, hula, signing, hip-hop, and modern dance), prayer evangelism, practical service, mercy ministry, street ministry, etc.

Who can attend?

Any Christian that has heart for knowing God and making Him known.  Applicants must be at least 18 years of age or a high school graduate (or equivalent).

Will I receive University credit for this course?

A successful completion of the Holoholo DTS will give you credits from the University of the Nations.  These credits may be transferred to various universities throughout the US and Canada, though the U of N chooses to be a non-accredited academic institution.  The DTS is the prerequisite to further involvement with Youth With A Mission in a staff or student capacity.  You may use these credits to continue a degree program through the U of N internationally.

How can I become a student?

Interested applicants must submit a complete student application, which includes the Basic Application, Health Information Form, three reference forms, a signed Financial Agreement Contract, and a $50 non-refundable application fee.  All parts of the application must be received in order for us to process you application.  To obtain an application you can choose to do one of the following:

•Download Option – You can download a copy of our student application from our website: www.holoholo.info

What is the cost and payment schedule for the "We Go" DTS?

Detailed information regarding school fees will be sent to all interested applicants and to those who have downloaded our application.

Will I need a Passport?

Each student application will need to provide his/her passport information.  The passport should show an expiration date no earlier than December 2012.  This will fulfill most foreign countries’ international visitors requirements.

What should I bring?

You are allowed TWO pieces of luggage (a camper's backpack, suitcase, etc.,) and a day pack (smaller backpacks, carry-on bags, etc.,) but keep in mind that when we travel for outreach, you are only allowed ONE check-in bag of 15 kg (30 lbs) and ONE carry-on of 7 kg (15 lbs). Remember, the lighter the luggage, the easier it will be to travel.  Keep in mind that we are a highly mobile school that travels with all our belongings to our overseas destinations.  We suggest bringing a light sleeping bag and pillow rather than standard bedding.

When packing, take into consideration that the weather in Hawaii varies from cooler nights to hot mornings. Also please keep in mind that we are an interdenominational and multicultural group.

The following is a list of suggested items to bring.  Again, feel free to contact us with any questions.

Will I have access to a telephone, email, and the Internet?  Will I be able to receive/send postal mail?

As a ministry, we know the importance of maintaining contact with family, friends, and home churches while in DTS. However, because of all the traveling, regular phone and internet access is limited, and we are unable to provide for these services at this time. You can, however, bring a personal cell phone and/or laptop. Cellular service is limited in some areas. Keep in mind that we will travel a lot, and you will be responsible for your own luggage and possessions. Students may also use accessible pay phones (with a phone card) or internet/email cafes during free time at their own expense. Our ministry and school postal mail is received in Kona. When the school is traveling, we cannot guarantee that students will receive mail regularly.

What is an average HIDTS class size?

By preference, we accept 10-15 students per school.  We believe this helps to ensure family-style living and a closer community. Also, because of mobility, we are unable to accommodate large schools at the present time.

Where will we go on outreach?

We will be going to the Philippines and Thailand.

Will I need shots for outreach?

We suggest (but do not require) receiving or updating your Hepatitis A & B, typhoid, and tetanus shots before coming. Please contact your doctor about shots before you arrive for DTS, as many are multiple shots and may take some time. If you choose not to get shots, you are doing so at your own risk.

What kinds of ministry does HIDTS do and participate in?

As a YWAM and Christian ministry, we believe we are called to fulfill the Great Commission.  The "We Go" DTS accomplishes this through various types of ministries, including (but not limited to) evangelism (prayer, street, friendship), mercy ministries (hospitals, caring for the poor and needy), youth ministries (schools, community programs, sports, etc.), and through the creative arts.  The creative arts have been an important and effective tool to reach people of all ages, languages, cultures, and lifestyles.  All students, experienced and inexperienced, will be encouraged to participate and learn in our creative arts program, which includes music, various types of dance, drama, and other multi-media and art-related tools.
